Long before restaurants, before menus, before hospitality became a craft, sharing food and drink was simply how humans stayed alive together. We have dressed it in linen and lighting since, given it Michelin stars and tasting menus, but the instinct underneath has never moved. A cup handed from one person to another still means something. It always has.
Cemal Ezel understood that instinct better than most, and he saw it going to waste every morning.
The Idea Born on a London Pavement
On his way to work in London he kept passing the same people, sleeping in doorways, stepped around by a city on its way to somewhere else. Most of us look away. He noticed something instead. The crowds clutching their lattes would rarely stop to hand money to someone on the street, yet they would happily pay for a coffee two steps later. The stigma that closed wallets to a person sleeping rough disappeared the moment there was a cup to buy.
That gap, between what people won’t give and what they will gladly buy, became the whole idea. What if the most ordinary drink in the world could carry something extraordinary? What if a flat white on the way to work could put someone on their own way out of homelessness?
Could a Flat White Change a Life?
In 2015 he set up a single coffee cart in Covent Garden to find out.
Ten years on, that one cart has become one of the best-known social enterprises in the UK, and the model has stayed honest to the morning that started it. Change Please Coffee trains people who have experienced homelessness to become baristas, then supports them with the things a fresh start actually requires: a living wage job, help finding accommodation, a bank account, therapy, and a route into longer-term work. Every bit of profit from the coffee funds that work.
Why the Coffee Has to Be Good
The coffee is genuinely good, which matters more than it might seem. Nobody keeps buying a cause out of guilt. They keep coming back for the flat white, and the change rides along inside a drink they wanted anyway. That is the quiet brilliance of it. The impact hides in an ordinary habit, so the habit does the work.
Where livecookintable® Comes In
This is where two paths meet. livecookintable® builds modular stations that let culinary teams cook and serve almost anywhere, without the fixed plumbing, extraction, and installation that usually tie service to one spot. A coffee station is simply that same thinking, poured. A self-contained counter that carries a full espresso setup, rolls into position, and is ready in minutes, wherever the guests happen to be.
Which is exactly what a barista from Change Please Coffee needed at the National Restaurant Association Show earlier this year. A trade show floor has no plumbing and no time for installation, yet the coffee service at the livecookintable® stand ran like a café that had always been there, because the Multitable coffee cart carried everything the moment required. The station handled the infrastructure. The barista handled the coffee, and the people at the counter.
Good Impact, One Cup at a Time
That is what good impact looks like in practice. A guest reaches for a coffee the way anyone reaches for a coffee, and behind that unremarkable moment sits something that is not unremarkable at all. The cup helps fund a person’s way off the street.
livecookintable® supplies the platform that lets the service happen anywhere. The impact stays where it belongs, with Change Please Coffee and the barista pouring the cup. Put the two together, and a hotel lobby, a terrace, or a pre-function space becomes somewhere that good service and real change arrive in the same cup.
We have spent centuries turning food and drink into something refined. The chance now is to make it mean something again.
So it is worth asking: how many cups will your venue pour this week, and what could each one carry?
